QUR-101: Fundamentals of Qur'an Recitation

All skill levels accommodated

This course is designed to help individuals learn and improve their Quran recitation skills. All students will undergo an initial evaluation, after which they will be placed into either the Level 1 (Beginner) or Level 2 (Intermediate/Advanced) by the end of the first week to ensure personalized learning.

Level 1 Overview

This level is designed for students who do not know the Arabic letters; it takes students from letter recognition to achieving foundational proficiency in reading the Qur'an by the end of the 12-week term. 

Learning Model

Students start with a 30-minute initial lesson on letter recognition and essential pronunciation rules, followed by 30-40 minutes of individualized practice with TA's. They are given regular homework to reinforce their learning and receive feedback during the individual practice time.

Instruction 

The course features one Lead Instructor and a team of Teacher Assistants who guide student groups and attend to their homework and recitation. All instructors and TAs have over 5 years of experience in teaching the Qur'an. The ratio of Instructor/TA to student is approximately 10:1

Level 2 Overview

This level is designed for students who already know the Arabic alphabet and have a basic to intermediate level of fluency in reciting the Qur’an. The course aims to develop further reading fluency, focusing on proper enunciation and teaching/applying tajwīd rules. Through guided exercises, interactive activities, and individualized feedback, students learn to recite the Qur’an properly with confidence and a renewed commitment to the book of Allah.

Main Session Instructor 

Ustadh Sohaib Sheikh

Ustadh Sohaib is a graduate of the Qalam ʿAlimiyyah program. He graduated with a Bachelors of Science from Rutgers University and a Bachelor of Arts from AlMaghrib Institute. He memorized the Quran and received traditional Ijazat in the ten recitations of the Quran (Sughra and Kubra). He has worked extensively with Islamic organizations like Young Muslims, MSA, Why Islam, and AlMaghrib. Additionally, Ustadh Sohaib gives khutbahs and talks around the Dallas area. He serves as an Instructor in both the Qur'ani Literacy Program as well as the Associates Program.
